I hate soccer

I'm out of town and my husband calls to let me know he's aggravated. Why? The forty-two soccer games he has to go over the next week with #3.

"I'm a soccer player, it's why I kick so much when I sleep--a general reflex. I'm always thinking about my kicks. "

"Fascinating insight dear."

"Mom, I have a game tonight, tomorrow, Thursday and Friday. Are you coming?"
My husband says to me privately on the phone in an irritated voice,

"I hate soccer and if I never had to see other soccer game I'd be thrilled. Why does he play?"

"Be with his buddies. He doesn't play much does he?"

"Hardly at all."

"You wonder why?Could be because he can't breathe when he runs up the field...little problem with lung capacity!"

"He could just do boy scouts....but NOO, he's gotta play soccer, basketball and tennis all of which he'll never understand that he has difficulty running around."

He's a tad irritated. But I'm glad that he plays. I know it affects his self-esteem and self-confidence. Any team sport teaches him about team play, the responsibility of being on a team, getting himself organized and learning how to get along with others.

Being on a team is important in a child's development...whether or not your child plays doesn't. Parent's inappropriate intervention is a problem. Parents should leave coaching to the coach...we always have and always will.

Course, #3 says it best,

"Mom, I know what I'm doing...I'm a soccer player first and foremost."
You go #3 and hopefully I can be there on Thursday.

Thank You for Being Here. It really means a lot to me that you take time out of your schedule to come by.

I played sports growing up. Swimming, especially, I thought was helpful.

Well, as a parent, it is only natural for us to support and encourage our kid, even if we really do not want to attend another game. I'm glad #3 enjoys soccer and looks forward to the trainings.

Hey thanks Math tutor! Glad you swam, so did I. I loved it. Too bad #3 can't go out for swimming...he'd do that too!

Whether hubbie likes it or not...he's going to soccer games. He's the world's greatest Dad! I recognize that...

You know soccer is the biggest sport in Norway (like in most rest of the world) and I just loved to play when I was young. and your so right: building team feeling is the most part of it so keep on supporting!
